Okay, so this year, thanks to the pandemic, Valentine’s Day will need to be different. “Going out on a date” probably won’t actually mean “going out.” But we Mainers are creative and resourceful, and we know Valentine’s Day can still be a cozy, romantic affair—pandemic or no pandemic. Here are 4 great ways to make it extra special!

Catch a Classic Valentine’s Day Movie

Whether it’s 50 First Dates, You’ve Got Mail, or The Notebook, the all-time most romantic movies are, quite naturally, the all-time best Valentine’s Day movies. Pop some yummy-smelling popcorn, light a mood-setting candle, open a bottle of your favorite wine, and “catch a classic” while snuggled up on your sofa!

Stream a Valentine’s Day Concert

Despite most live-music venues in Maine (and elsewhere) being closed, many popular musicians are stepping up to offer great Valentine’s Day concerts via livestream. For example, Josh Groban will perform songs from his new album, Harmony, as well as fan favorites, in a gala Valentine’s Day concert starting at 8 p.m. Eastern Time on February 14th. And Air Supply, that great love-songs band from the 1970s, will offer a very special “Love Letters Worldwide Virtual Concert” at 8 p.m. on Valentine’s Day. Check Google to see other popular artists doing this, too!

Take a “Trip” to France

Maine is home to the highest percentage of French-descendant people in the U.S. (25 percent of our population), and we love and embrace that culture. So why not take your sweetheart on a dreamy “French holiday”? Pretend you are visiting Paris (the City of Love) with a French-themed date night. Kick off the evening with a warm, cozy glass of Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Noir, along with hors d’oeuvres such as French onion soup or French cheeses. Follow with a delectable main course such as coq au vin, ratatouille, or beef bourguignon. Ce sera enchanteur!

Play Retro Video Games

According to research (undoubtedly conducted by Dr. Love), couples feel closer and more intimate when sharing nostalgic memories. So why not turn on your vintage video game system … pop in an all-time favorite throwback title . . . and let the fun begin! (If your Playstation, Nintendo 64, etc., is long gone, no worries. You can find many games online.)
