Some people see December through February as a time of nothing but cold, ice, and early sunsets. But here in Lewiston-Auburn, most of us see it entirely differently. We see that time of year as the season when a “Winter Wonderland” suddenly appears for those who LOVE outdoor winter activities in Maine. If you’d like to live in that spirit, here are 5 winter activities you can enjoy, while also getting great exercise and building warm, glowing memories with those you love!

Skiing

Maine is virtually synonymous with “great skiing” and here in the Lewiston-Auburn area you can enjoy TONS of great skiing opportunities. At destinations such as Sunday River or Lost Valley, you’ll find the very best Maine has to offer in terms of joy-filled, family-friendly skiing. Snowshoeing

Imagine burning 1,000 calories an hour … in a way that’s so enjoyable you’re not even aware you’re doing it! That’s the experience most folks have with snowshoeing. Easily one of the most fun and memorable ways to enjoy the outdoors, this is also a perfect way to see Maine wildlife—deer, rabbits, foxes, squirrels, and more—up-close as you bask in the crisp outdoor air.

Ice Skating

You may think of ice skating as “all that fun I had when I was a kid,” but it also offers a slew of benefits for adults who want to get in on the fun. You’ll burn 450 to 650 calories per hour, increase your athleticism and balance, sharpen your mind’s ability to focus and concentrate, and just generally have a wonderful time!

Sledding and Tobogganing

Whether you grab a sled, a toboggan, or a “flying saucer” like Chevy Chase did in Christmas Vacation(!), tons o’ fun await you while sledding in Lewiston-Auburn. You can make an all-afternoon circuit in Auburn, parking at the popular hill at Pettengill Park, then tromping a quarter-mile south to the hills at the Union Street Gully. Or you can enjoy other great sledding spots in Lewiston, including Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary and Davis Mountain at Bates College.

Treasure Hunting

Last but not least, here’s a great outdoor winter activity your children or grandchildren will especially love! Using food coloring, create frozen “gems” for the kids to find outdoors. Simply fill an ice cube tray with water, drip a couple of drops of food coloring into each mold, and pop the tray in the freezer. When the water freezes, it will create ice cubes that look like gorgeous gems. Hide these gems around your yard or near a wooded trail, and let the kids go on an unforgettable treasure hunt!
