It’s an idea we believe will have a powerful, beneficial impact right here in the Lewiston-Auburn community. As recently reported in the Lewiston Sun Journal, we at Maine Source Homes & Realty are celebrating 50 years of business by giving back to the community—specifically to 6 highly deserving local nonprofits—via our “Helping Our Neighbors” Campaign. Our March-April beneficiary is ACADIA Academy, a public charter school located at 12 Westminster Street in Lewiston.
To explain why Maine Source Homes & Realty so strongly supports ACADIA Academy, we turned to Tracy Turner, Operations Manager at ACADIA and one of its founders.
Preparing Children for Long-Term Success
To begin, we asked Tracy what is distinctive about ACADIA Academy.
“ACADIA is an acronym for A Charter Academy for Developing Independence and Achievement,” Tracy responded. “We target the development of the whole child through a strong social/emotional learning component, as well as offering highly differentiated academic instruction for all students. We also provide year-round learning opportunities.”
Asked how that approach uniquely benefits children, Tracy said, “Our students benefit by becoming strong, independent students who self-advocate and get to know themselves as learners. Our approach of offering instruction to students at their personal instructional level—and providing appropriate supports to best allow for their learning—has proven effective in preparing students for long term success.”
Tracy went on to say that community member-involvement is always welcome and appreciated at ACADIA. The school encourages outside programs to visit the ACADIA campus, so the children can be enriched by diverse life experiences.
How You Can Support ACADIA Academy
Public charter schools are funded by the school districts the students otherwise would attend. The district pays the charter schools a per-pupil tuition set by the state. Charter schools also must raise funds through gifts, donations, and grants.
Currently, ACADIA is seeking donations for the installation of a new playground structure, and for new wood chips for the playground area. They also hope to purchase a storage pulley system for the gymnasium.
