Family-Friendly Outdoor Winter Activities in Lewiston-Auburn

If you’re lucky enough to live in the Lewiston-Auburn area, you know it can be a “Winter Wonderland” for those who love-love-love family-friendly outdoor winter activities. While other folks might hide from the world while bingeing Netflix, you and your family can be out in the great Maine outdoors creating warm memories, getting great exercise, and prepping for that delicious cup of hot cocoa you’ll enjoy at the end of the day. Here are 4 of the family-friendly outdoor winter activities you and yours can revel in during mid-winter break from school and right up until April!

Snowshoeing

This is easily one of the most fun, memorable, and beneficial ways to enjoy great outdoor fun in Lewiston-Auburn. By snowshoeing on one of the great local wooded trails in our area, you can burn up to 1,000 calories per hour while ALSO likely seeing wildlife “up close and personal.” Imagine being able to call out a gentle “hello there!” to deer, rabbits, foxes, squirrels, and other animals as you bask in the clean, crisp outdoor air.

Ice Skating

Grab your ice skates, go to a safe frozen pond or nearby outdoor ice rink—and start having too much family-friendly fun! You’ll burn 450 to 650 calories per hour, increase your athleticism and balance, sharpen your mind’s ability to focus and concentrate, and enjoy other great mind/body benefits.

Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding

Maine OWNS great skiing and—as we mentioned in a previous blog—many of the most family-friendly slopes are within easy driving distance of anyone in the Lewiston-Auburn area. At destinations such as Sunday River or Lost Valley, you’ll find the very best Maine has to offer in terms of joy-filled, family-friendly skiing and snowboarding opportunities.

A Treasure Hunt!

Outdoor winter activities in the Lewiston-Auburn area simply wouldn’t be complete without a treasure hunt! Using food coloring, you can create frozen “gems” for your children or grandchildren to find. Fill an ice cube tray with water, drip a couple of drops of food coloring into each mold, and pop the tray in the freezer. When the water freezes, it will create ice cubes that look like gorgeous gems. Hide these gems around your yard or near a wooded trail, and let the kids go on a wondrous treasure hunt!
