One of the million-and-one GREAT things about ski resorts near Lewiston-Auburn is that everyone there is in a great mood. And that’s when the humor comes out. For example, you might hear someone turn into a Human Bumper Sticker and say, “My life is going downhill!”
If you love-love-love hitting great ski resorts, Central and Southern Maine offer you plenty of fun, unforgettable options. Here are 5 of our all-time favorites ski resorts, all within easy driving distance of Lewiston-Auburn:
Lost Valley
Famously billed as “A Mountain of Fun—Just Minutes Away!” Lost Valley is located right here in Auburn. Featuring an open-year-round, family-friendly brewpub that also boasts live music, Lost Valley has been one of Central Maine’s all-time favorite “learn to ski and snowboard” destinations for generations.
Sunday River Ski Resort
Offering a whopping 750 acres of open terrain in Newry, Maine, Sunday River is one of Maine’s largest, most internationally popular ski resorts. At 2,340 feet, its vertical drop is the second largest in Maine, behind only Sugarloaf. Proving that “big is beautiful,” Sunday River offers 135 trails and 15 lifts across 8 interconnected mountain peaks.
Mt. Abram Family Resort
Located in Greenwood and featuring 36 trails and 5 lifts, Mt. Abram offers a great mix of trails for beginners, intermediary skiers, and advanced skiers. One of the too-much-fun things about Mt. Abram is that all the trails are named after characters from the Rocky & Bullwinkle cartoon, such as Dudley Do Right, Boris Badenov, and Natasha’s Niche!
Shawnee Peak
The oldest major ski area in Maine, Bridgton’s Shawnee Peak is located at the northern end of Pleasant Mountain. Featuring two base areas and 245 skiable acres, the area has been dishing up family fun—now including night skiing—since 1938. Featuring an array of yurts, cabins, and lodges, Shawnee Peak can also be your ticket to a sleep-over followed by brisk morning skiing!
Black Mountain of Maine
Most famous for its Nordic skiing facilities, Black Mountain in Rumford has hosted several National Cross-Country Skiing Championships on its 17 kilometers (approximately 10.5 miles) of trails. The downhill skiing area was expanded in 2005, and now features 46 trails serviced by two chairlifts.
Whether you go to one of these world-class ski resorts, or one of the many others across Maine, including family recreational ski areas, a day or weekend of skiing can be like an exhilarating, unforgettable visit to a Winter Playground. And that’s something you definitely don’t want to miss!
