Ah … autumn in Maine. Is there anything closer to “The Way Life Should Be”? The gorgeous, resplendent foliage. The crisp, clean air. The mellow mood and cozy feelings enjoyed over a delicious cup of hot apple cider. And one thing more: Autumn hikes. Hikes that bring you directly into the heart of the Nature-Lover’s Paradise, otherwise known as the state of Maine.

When you wish to experience unique peace and serenity … deep quietude … the soft crunch of multi-colored autumn leaves under your feet . . . here are 4 autumn hikes in the Lewiston-Auburn area that will transport you into that perfect outdoors experience.

Thorncrag Bird Nature Trail

One of Lewiston-Auburn’s most popular trails for autumn hikes and bird watching, this 2.2-mile route is easy-to-walk and takes about an hour to complete. The trail is open year-round and is especially beautiful and memorable in the crisp New England autumn. Dog-lovers please note: You’ll need to leave your canine companion at home, as dogs aren’t allowed on this trail. (Please see below for dog-friendly trails information.)

David Rancourt River Preserve Loop

This gorgeous, 14-acre preserve is owned by the Androscoggin Land Trust and is a component of the Androscoggin Greenway. The property contains a 1-mile-long loop walking trail, a hand-carry boat launch, two beautiful sand beaches, and a scenic overlook. The preserve is named in honor of Deputy David Rancourt, whose love of the river and dedication to his country and community will forever be remembered.

Lewiston-Auburn Greenway Trail

Located near the Great Falls of the Androscoggin River, this trail heads north on a gravel path and offers wondrous views of the five waterfalls. As you walk by the river, in front of apartment buildings and through parks, you’ll marvel at the diversity of human and dog life abounding here. The path meanders close to the Androscoggin and offers striking views of Lewiston’s and Auburn’s skyline, gardens, outdoor art, and benches.

McMahon Nature Trail

Another gentle and fairly easy autumn hike, this 1.4-mile loop trail takes an average of 28 minutes to complete. Great for hiking and for “people and pooch comradery,” this trail begins directly behind the McMahon Elementary School in Lewiston and offers a particularly peaceful and quiet experience. Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash.
