There’s something magical about visiting one of Maine’s parks. Where else can you enjoy such unforgettable summer fun while also connecting with so much of the beautiful natural world?
While folks come from every corner of the world to enjoy our 32 state parks, we in the Lewiston-Auburn area also cherish the unforgettable, only-in-Maine experience you and your family can enjoy at one of our local parks. Here are 5 of our favorites …
Originally called City Park, this popular r & r destination was renamed in honor of President John F. Kennedy, who spoke here before he was elected president in 1960. Sprawling over 9 gorgeous acres, the park features four symmetrical paths that cross from corner to corner and side to side. Starting in the 1950s, Lewiston began redesigning the park’s south quadrant, adding family-friendly recreational facilities that now include a playground, tennis and basketball courts, a swimming pool, and a skateboard park.
Want to go bird watching as you enjoy big summer fun? Offering a rich abundance of hiking trails, Thorncrag Nature Sanctuary is splashed across 450 acres. The sanctuary sits as a forested oasis surrounded by some of the city’s prime urban and suburban real estate. Although often visited by biology and ecology classes, Thorncrag avidly encourages a wide variety of recreation, including picnicking, hiking, walking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, sledding, skating, and nature photography.
Androscoggin Riverlands State Park
Offering one of Maine’s most extensive walking-trail networks, Androscoggin Riverlands State Park in Lewiston is the fifth-largest park in Maine, unfolding over 2,345 lush acres. Scenic outlooks, wildlife, trail variation, and 12 miles of river frontage combine to make this one of Maine’s prime outdoor destinations. Surprisingly, more than half of Maine’s population—and much of its prime real estate—is within an hour’s drive of the park.
Simard-Payne Law Enforcement Memorial Park
Formerly named Railroad Park, this relaxing walking-path park in Lewiston was officially renamed to honor local law enforcement officers who gave their lives serving the local community. A wide array of paved paths wind their way along the Androscoggin River, making for a uniquely pleasant walking experience for hikers and casual strollers. The park also features shade trees, a multi-use playing field, and an amphitheater.
Lying at the mouth of the Little Androscoggin River in New Auburn, Anniversary Park is one of the area’s most appealing relaxation destinations. Transformed in 2019-2020 as part of the New Auburn Village Center Plan, the park is part of numerous improvements to the riverfront. An exquisite new bell tower—Maine’s second-highest monument—periodically tolls out a warm welcome to summer fun-seeking guests.
